InfoReliance Launches New Portal for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

FAIRFAX, Va. – InfoReliance announces it has delivered a sophisticated, public-facing system for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on time and on budget. The new database, SaferProducts.gov, went live today and for the first time consumers can empower themselves to make safer purchasing decisions.

In 2008, Congress enacted the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and mandated that CPSC develop a system to mitigate the increasing risk of harmful or potentially hazardous consumer products. CPSC’s Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) Office worked in conjunction with InfoReliance to architect a solution to meet the requirement of the Act.

Due to the rising hazard trends with children’s products as well as recent concerns with Federal spending cutbacks, InfoReliance understood the importance of delivering the new system on time and on budget. The company was able to satisfy this objective by using its Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 3 assessed quality management system. InfoReliance also leveraged its significant experience in deploying similar solutions for the Public Health Service and the Food Safety Inspection Service to build CPSC’s database.

As an award-winning Microsoft Gold Certified partner, InfoReliance utilized many technologies from the software vendor and related partners to develop SaferProducts.gov including SharePoint, Silverlight, and ConceptSearching. InfoReliance’s design and integration of the selected software help users quickly search for information to make better decisions. Sample features of the site include:

  • Combining incident reports with recall notices together for the first time
  • Easy-to-use form wizard with a save capability to complete reports of harm at a later time if needed
  • Geospatial map information for internal analysts to easily spot trends in product hazards or incidents
  • Enhanced search capabilities via ConceptSearching to provide consumers with relevant results even if search criteria is vague

“We are proud of our team’s deployment of SaferProducts.gov,” says Marshall Thames, InfoReliance Chief Operating Officer, “The quality of the site and our innovative technical solution demonstrate InfoReliance’s commitment to making our client’s success a top priority.”
